Bone Deep is a beautifully written Gothic tale by the wonderful Sandra Ireland, a perfect combination of fairy tale and creeping terror.
The reader is introduced to Mac, a retired historian writing a collection of stories based on folklore and Lucie, a lost girl trying to escape the mistakes of her love life. Both characters are heavily flawed and yet even as they begin to antagonise each other and the truth unravels, they still remain relatable, intriguing and sympathetic. Although I think Floss might be my favourite character!
The settings of the novel are described so vividly, they almost become characters themselves – the damp cold of the cottage, the safety of Arthur’s cafe, the menacing Mill and it’s suspicious reek. There is almost a conflict between the haunted world of Mac and the Mill, and the modern world that has a Bronte-esque feel.
The intertext of ‘The Cruel Sister’ is woven into the novel artfully, ringing through it much like the harp’s song in that tale as a constant reminder of Lucie’s guilt and ultimately Mac’s too. It mirrors the novel’s events and furthers the sense of foreboding that snowballs as it goes on.
I devoured this book in only a couple of sittings. It was such a delicious mix of irresistible and chilling, that there was no way I was putting it down!
If you haven’t already read it, I would also recommend her debut novel Beneath the Skin.

It features one of my absolute favourite quotes from the novel, one that particularly sums up its feminist message:
“Do you think I am an automaton? — a machine without feelings? and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! — I have as much soul as you — and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh: it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God’s feet, equal — as we are!”
